Matt joined the Seraphic team in October, 2015 as the VP of Business Development for VSRI. He brings 18 years of experience in IP development, licensure, product research and development in both the academic and private sectors.
Matt Bednar, PhD, began his professional education pursuing his interest in materials with a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from The University of Pennsylvania. During these early college years Matt worked summers in the lab of Prof. Doris Kuhlmann-Wilsdorf at The University of Virginia. Matt’s diligent work in Doris’ lab evolved into graduate studies and an eventual PhD in Materials Science and Engineering under her guidance.
Matt and Doris continued their work together outside of academia through the development of a spin-off company, HiPerCon, LLC. Over the next 12 years Matt was instrumental in the development of products using metal-fiber electrical contacts, a technology invented and patented by Doris Kuhlmann-Wilsdorf.. Matt’s research and innovation resulted in new methods of manufacturing and testing allowing efficient, reproducible nuclear-certified products that are presently a critical power-generation component used in the U.S. Navy submarine fleet.
Matt’s interest in successful product development and further professional growth resulted in his eventual departure from small company development to work at The University of Virginia’s Licensing & Venture’s Group. For 6 years Matt developed his marketing, negotiation and licensing contract skills while experiencing the challenges and benefits of intellectual property development which included closing the largest, to his knowledge, up-front payment licensing deals in the University’s history.
It was with a still further need to develop products beyond licensing transactions that brought Matt to the Seraphic Group’s AtlusBlue project. Matt’s start-up and IP management experience has allowed him to integrate quickly into this project that is centered on the development of a global online community for project collaboration. Matt knows the challenges AtlusBlue citizens will need to overcome in their pursuit of project development and is eager to offer a platform where intellectual property is protected yet aligned with the power of a global social media community.
